Mark 4:21-34
What stands out to you in v. 21-25?
Hidden secrets are revealed
“Ears to hear” is constantly repeated
“And he was saying to them” is repeated
Is there a connection between the lamp and the parables in the earlier chapters?
Once a person establishes themselves as “good soil”, their role is to act like a lamp of the word.
Don’t be shy about your knowledge of the “secrets revealed”
What can we take from it?
Hear, obey and proclaim
Stewardship and responsibility
Let people see your good deeds (Matthew 5:16)

Questions regarding the application:
Is it a life encompassing application or do we create specific goals for our application in our everyday lives (or both)?

As a church, how can we apply this?
Keep our doors as open as possible
The suggestion of a Tamil church

What was v. 26-34 tell us about the Kingdom of God?
Current perception was a physical kingdom (John 6:15).
Jesus explained why he was sent (Luke 4:43)
The kingdom involved judgement (Matthew 13:41-43)
The kingdom was not of this world (John 18:36)

Parables are a glimpse into what they represent.
For example, the Parable of the Prodigal Son – the prodigal son went through a cycle of selfish rejection of the father and then repentance, the father allowed the son free will and then gave him forgiveness, the brother was resentful and hard-hearted
The parables here describe only a glimpse into the Kingdom of God

What’s interesting about the parable of the man sowing the seed:
The man goes to sleep after sowing the seed, but the seed continues to grow
The man has faith that the seeds will grow, even though he doesn’t know how
The man accepts the mystery of the seed, releases control of the seed, and shows maturity in his faith

In this parable, we are the farmers, not the seed
The Kingdom of God takes on a subtle growth

What’s special about the parable of the mustard seed?
It is small and insignificant, the original size is small, but the size of it’s produce is large
Birds are nesting in the tree

Is Jesus the mustard seed or are we? Both Jesus and we appear as insignificant to the rest of the world, but what we produce can be great.

What is the application?
We need to not only listen to Jesus, but soak in what He is teaching.
Some people equate risk with faith. The sower might have taken a risk by going to sleep, but he had faith. Faith is only evident when we take risks.
We might be disappointed by the way the world thinks of us or even by our own standards, but the Kingdom of God grows subtly.
