Mark 2 : 13 – 3: 6

Observations:

The passage doesn’t follow a sequence – it seems like the incidents were strung together according to how Mark remembered it, but they all pointed to a specific topic.

Some commonalities between the four passages in this portion
· Pharisees
· Jesus wasn’t keeping the ‘letter of the law’
· Jesus had a new interpretation to traditions
· People questioned Jesus – bringing conflict
· Jesus talks about His deity; about who He is
· The Pharisees plotted to kill Jesus; they plotted against Him

Three main questions for the four passages:
1. What is the conflict? (Conflict)
2. What is Jesus’ response? (Response)
3. What does it mean for us? (Take Away)

Passage 1 ( Mark 2:13-17) Main point: Stigma; Exclusion
1. Conflict: Jesus hanging out with the sinners.
· The Pharisees as holy men, ‘set apart’ men, did not approve of this.
· They saw sinners as not having a place in God’s kingdom
2. Response: Jesus tells the Pharisees that they have no need for Him.
3. Take away: We need to ask ourselves – whom do we exclude? People not like us?
· We need to take risks in relationships
· Jesus makes us re-work out theological assumptions

Passage 2 (Mark 3:18-22) Main point: Tradition - Fasting
1. Conflict: The disciples were not measuring up to the Pharisees’ requirements
2. Response: Jesus doesn’t give in. He knew His agenda
· He explains that the new and the old are different
· The new will create problems for the old when mixed up
3. Take Away: Jesus redeemed grace. What are the traditions that we follow which Jesus may question?

Passage 3 & 4 (Mark 2:23 – 3:6) Main point: Tradition – Sabbath ; Healing
1. Conflict: The Pharisees had made laws and Jesus and His disciples broke them
2. Response: Jesus talks about David and how the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.
3. Take Away: Sabbath. Time set apart for rest – physical or otherwise.
· A time of rejuvenation and restoration
· Sometimes we just need to sleep!
· A time we purposefully set apart
· It should be done periodically

Through this portion of Scripture, our perception of God has changed:
· We see Him now as ‘chilled out’
· “unconditioned”
· Basic; uncomplicated
· A radical

Jesus gives us a new definition of grace.
